How Do Medicare Supplement Plans Work?

Medicare supplement plans, also known as Medigap policies, can save you money and ensure complete health care coverage by filling in your Original Medicare coverage gaps. Even with Medicare, you won’t get all your health care costs covered. Let a Medigap plan cover some of your out-of-pocket expenses.

There are several Medigap plans available, and they include different options and payment structures. However, they will generally cover the following items:

  • Certain services not covered by Original Medicare, like blood transfusions or skilled nursing

  • Copayments, coinsurance and deductibles from Medicare Part A and Part B

  • Emergency care needed during foreign travel

Since Medigap plans vary, Shankland Insurance can help you find the policy that will offer you the right combination of benefits and affordability.

Who Is Eligible?

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to be eligible for Medicare supplement plans. If you’re under age 65 and receive Medicare as part of your disability benefits, you can also enroll in a Medicare supplement plan in Iowa. Remember, your qualifications for Medigap plans might depend on factors like your age, health, location and financial status.

Keep in mind that if both you and your spouse want this coverage, you’ll need to purchase separate policies as a Medicare supplement plan only covers one person.

How Do I Enroll?
The best time to buy a Medicare supplement plan is during your Medigap open enrollment period, the six months beginning on the first day of the month that you turn age 65 or older. During this time, you won’t be denied coverage for any pre-existing health conditions.

And if you don’t have Part B already, you’ll first have to enroll in that coverage to be eligible for Medigap plans. Then, you will have six months to secure Medigap coverage.

How Much Do Supplemental Plans Cost?
The cost of Medicare supplement plans can vary based on various factors, including the following:

  • The plan’s service area

  • The age you enrolled in Medicare

  • The age you currently are when enrolling in a Medicare supplement plan

There are several Medigap plan options for residents of Iowa. If you’re looking for additional coverage, our insurance professionals can work with you to find the right supplemental plans.
