How to Prevent Apartment Theft
Thieves typically view apartments as easier targets than houses, simply because they’re often equipped with fewer security measures. The good news is that there are steps you can take to make your apartment more secure and, therefore, less appealing to criminals.
Lock Up
Apartment doorframes and doors are often weaker than those of houses, making them easier to break down. Ask management if the maintenance crew could install a deadbolt, or even if you could install one yourself, to boost your security. Additionally, the sliding glass doors that lead to apartment balconies provide their own security issues. To prevent them from being pried open, place a wooden rod in the track when the door is not in use.
Confusion Tactics
Thieves often target apartments if it looks like no one is home. You can buy a few inexpensive timers and set lights, a radio and even a TV to turn on and off at random intervals throughout the day to make it appear as if you’re home. And while you may not have much control over your work schedule, you can pop by your home over lunch if you live nearby to check on things.
Use Your Complex’s Resources
Most apartment complexes have a courtesy officer at your disposal. If you plan to be away for more than a day, ask your courtesy officer to keep an eye on your place for any signs of a break in. Also, keep in mind, living on a higher level is often safer in apartment complexes because thieves have a harder time breaking into windows and carrying large items downstairs without being seen.
Prepare for the Worst
Even the safest apartments can be targets of theft. In such cases, it’s best if you’ve prepared in advance. Take a home inventory of everything you own and value so your insurance company has a record to work off of when calculating your benefits. Your independent insurance agent can advise you on how best to accomplish this task.
